I got my PhD in ecology from Leeds University, and then worked for the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology / Centre for Ecology & Hydrology for 17 years before moving to the University of Aberdeen in 2007, where I became Director of the Aberdeen Centre for Environmental Sustainability. I ran large scale experiments to explore the role of competition, predation and livestock grazing on bird populations. My work on predation led me into conservation and especially the field of conservation conflicts and I am increasingly interested in how we can use transdisciplinary approaches to tackle issues in environmental sustainability.
